The Autobiography of a Fool cover: the word FOOL in heavy orange letters over an engraved scene of a bookshelf, an open book and a crown on a wooden table, with the reference 1 Samuel 26:21

Saul’s own confession

Behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

“Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.” 1 Samuel 26:21 (KJV)

“In these words we have a perfect autobiography.” G. Campbell Morgan, as quoted in Part I

Saul had it all—anointing, friendship, kingship—yet he wrote his autobiography as a fool, descending into spiritual ruin. This isn’t just Saul’s story—it’s a mirror for us.

Six parts · his life, frame by frame

Seven mistakes that turned a king into a cautionary tale.

Mistake #1 Pride overtook humility

Part I: The Fool’s Foundation A promising start squandered

Saul’s journey began with divine favor—chosen and anointed as Israel’s first king. But Saul was rushed into kingship without first surrendering to the King of Kings. Saul built his house on a faulty foundation.

“And Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head…”

1 Samuel 10:1
Part II graphic: The Autobiography of a Fool, The Fool’s First Fall: Cracks in the Foundation

Mistake #2 Disobedience through impatience

Part II: The Fool’s First Fall Cracks in the foundation

Saul built an altar but overstepped his role. Saul wasn’t willing to wait on God’s timing, so he forced the issue. He trusted self more than he trusted God.

“Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God…”

1 Samuel 13:13
Part III graphic: The Autobiography of a Fool, The Fool’s Deflection: A Plague of Blame-Shifting

Mistake #3 Deflection

Part III: The Fool’s Deflection A plague of blame-shifting

Saul blamed the people instead of owning his sin. Fools fling blame like mud; wise men own their mess and rise above.

“…the people were scattered from me… I forced myself therefore…”

1 Samuel 13:11-12

The Fool’s Pride: the idol of image

Mistake #4 Self-glorification

Part IV: The Fool’s Pride The idol of image

Selfish preservation leads to monuments, not altars. It is the ultimate battle of humanity, man’s will vs God’s will.

“…Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place…”

1 Samuel 15:12

The Fool’s Disobedience: the cancer of partial obedience

Mistake #5 Partial obedience

Part V: The Fool’s Disobedience The cancer of partial obedience

Partial obedience is disobedience—a little fox, a bit of cancer—that grows unchecked. Full obedience is the only way we can escape playing the fool.

“Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.”

Song of Solomon 2:15

The Fool’s Final Fall: the swift road to destruction

Mistake #6 Turning to darkness

Part VI: The Fool’s Final Fall The swift road to destruction

Saul was desperate for direction. But he sought it in the wrong place. He sought counsel in the dark.

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

Proverbs 11:14

Mistake #7 Unrepentant death

Saul built monuments, not altars—chasing David to his death, he died desolate.

1 Samuel 31:4

Shift from monuments to altars—surrender now and live wisely!

Series quote graphic: Selfish preservation builds monuments, not altars. Don’t play the fool; die to self and live for God.

Part VI · The triumph of wisdom

Saul died a fool—we don’t have to.

The five foolish virgins lived carelessly, lamps empty, missing the Bridegroom—Saul’s fate. But the five wise virgins—they were prudent, kept oil in their lamps, knew the urgency of the hour, followed directions, and took the initiative themselves—took ownership.

But wisdom triumphs—how do we get it?

  1. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…”

    Start with reverence. Proverbs 9:10

  2. “Get wisdom, get understanding… Wisdom is the principal thing…”

Pursue it like gold. Proverbs 4:5, 7

  3. “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise…”

Listen to God’s Word and godly voices. Proverbs 19:20

  4. “…incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding…”

Seek it earnestly, pray for it, and God will give it. Proverbs 2:2-5

  5. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally…”

Ask, and He’ll provide! James 1:5
