From Lesson 1
“The book of James is a lot like a twitter feed of one liners that we could live by.”
Five lessons · one per chapter
James, one chapter at a time.
-
Chapter 1 Lesson 1
We must hear and we must do!
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
Desire (lust)→Deception (temptation)→Disobedience (sin)=Death
“The goodness of God is our greatest barrier against yielding temptation.”
God cannot build character without cooperation on our part.
Talk about it How can I apply the word of God to what I say and do?
-
Chapter 2 Lesson 2
My actions will show you my faith!
“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”
“You can check all the boxes of religion but lack relationship with God and others.”
Dynamic faith puts boots on the ground and gets to work.
Talk about it What’s something you can do tomorrow for someone else?
-
Chapter 3 Lesson 3
Our words can start fires.
“Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!”
“James gives us six powerful examples of the tongue:”
- A bit in a horse’s mouth 3:2–3
- The rudder of a boat 3:4
- It’s as a fire 3:5–6
- A poisonous animal 3:7–8
- A fountain 3:9–11
- A fig tree 3:12–18
The roots of what is in your heart will be what overflows out of your mouth.
-
Chapter 4 Lesson 4
Pride is no way to promotion!
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
“For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
“Greater knowledge gives greater responsibility.”
Talk about it Who are you trying to take to heaven with you and what have you done this week about it?
-
Chapter 5 Lesson 5
The Lord is coming back!
“Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord.”
“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
“There is no privilege we have as christians more powerful than prayer.”
Surround yourself with people who tell you if you are taking steps in the wrong direction.
Quoted lines, verses and questions are as printed in the five lesson plans. The slab one-liners are the series’ own quote posts.
