Part I · Double-edged Sword

Our memory serves as a double‑edged sword. It can work for us, but it can also work against us!

It can work for us

“And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”

Hebrews 10:17

The statement that God will remember sins no more means that He will no longer call them back to memory with a view to condemning the sinner.

It can work against us

There is the other side of our memory that can prove to be fatal: it’s called Spiritual Amnesia.

How can I so easily forget how great God is? It becomes clear when looking all the way back to Adam and Eve’s lack of trust, to the Israelites wandering in the desert, to Peter’s denial and fear.

From Part I, NeverForget_01.

Part II · Spiritual Amnesia

There is a high cost to a fading memory.

That’s why we sin. We forget the wickedness of our sin and what it cost our Savior to redeem us from it.

That’s why we hesitate to forgive. We forget that God in Christ has forgiven us.

That’s why we get depressed, lose hope, become joyless and settle into spiritual mediocrity. We forget Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, has conquered every one of our enemies and given us a sure future in heaven.
