What mean these stones?
“When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.”
Joshua 4:21–22
On the Arctic tundra there are few natural landmarks, so people built them from stone. They are called Inukshuk, and many are built in the shape of a man to say “someone has passed this way before.”
The church has that kind of heritage too: a firm foundation left by the ones who came before. The series lays it one stone at a time.
From the opening of each lesson, Parts 1–5.
The five stones
Foundation first.
- Stone #1 · The Bible
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
Isaiah 40:8 - Stone #2 · Oneness
One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Ephesians 4:5–6 - Stone #3 · Salvation
Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:38 - Stone #4 · Holiness
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14 - Stone #5 · Evangelism
Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:15
Stone #1 · Week 1
Everything eventually loses its power, except for the Word of God.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:105
The lesson sets two Greek words side by side: the Word is both recorded truth (LOGOS) and our moment of truth (RHEMA). “Not only do they work together, in reality they cannot work apart!”
Part 1, Bible (3 pages)

Stone #2 · Week 2
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:4 · the Shema
The lesson calls this “the most powerful revelation in Scripture, because if there is only one God then He deserves my total allegiance.”
God didn’t send someone else to save us, He came Himself!
Part 2, Oneness (3 pages)
Stone #3 · Week 3
Salvation: the gospel, and obeying the gospel
Gospel =
Death
Burial
Resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:1–4
Obeying the gospel =
Repentance
Baptism
Holy Ghost
Acts 2:38
The lesson calls repentance “a ‘turning around’ or an ‘about face’”, then names three parts: receive the Lord, take on His name, and let Him give the power to change. Then we are born again.
Part 3, Salvation (3 pages)

Stone #4 · Week 4
Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1 Peter 1:16
Jesus wants to be more than the Saviour who forgives your sins, He wants to be the Lord who affects your everyday character and conduct!
Part 4, Holiness (4 pages)

Stone #5 · Week 5
Here am I; send me.
Isaiah 6:8
There is absolutely nothing more important to God than a soul.
The Jerusalem church had every other stone in place. The lesson asks what happened when it overlooked this one.
Part 5, Evangelism (3 pages)
Read in every lesson
Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.
“And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.”
Ephesians 2:20
